Goal Digging In 2020 by Wendie Barragan
The new year is finally here and it is time to set new goals. If you are like me, you might feel like this is a daunting task. But fear not: there are so many tools to help you get started! One of the most proven techniques to set goals is the S.M.A.R.T technique.
SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely.
Let’s break these down into 5 easy steps.
Specific
When setting your goal make sure it is specific and you can apply the 5 W’s questions- who, what, when, where and why. The clearer your goal, the easier it will be to focus and know what you need to do to reach it.
Measurable
Once you have your goal in mind it’s very important to measure your success. Determine what is going to be your indicator for progress and, once you reach it, check it off your list. There are many great goal planners you can buy, so find the one that you like and start tracking.
Achievable
Question yourself to make sure that your goal is achievable. Personally, I like to read stories of individuals that have been successful at that goal. Asking for help from a mentor or someone who has accomplished the goal is another great idea to help you reach your goal. Checkout the inspiring women within ELLA Inspires!
Realistic
In order for you to reach your goal, it needs to be realistic and you will need to make sure you have the resources and support. When your goal is realistic, it will be achievable and even through challenges, you will have the confidence that you can succeed.
Timely
Set a start and end date to your goal. This will give your goal a sense of urgency. Will you have setbacks?
Get it done!
One of my favorite ways to motivate myself to reach my goals is to reward myself. It can be a special treat from my favorite coffee shop or even celebrating with friends. Ask a friend or your spouse to be your accountability partner to keep you on track and encourage you during setbacks. It is very important to have short term and long-term goals because that is how you can measure your skills and your progress. Goals to improve your health, career, finances, and relationships are very beneficial in every chapter of your life.
